Keylong, perched at 3,080 meters, is the administrative capital of Lahaul Valley, offering a blend of nature, history, and Buddhist culture. Unlike its colder neighbor Spiti, Keylong enjoys lush green summers, making it a refreshing stopover for travelers on the Manali-Leh Highway. The town is surrounded by mighty peaks, with the Chandra and Bhaga rivers flowing through its heart. Keylong is less commercialized than Manali, providing a peaceful retreat for those seeking solitude amid nature. The town also acts as the gateway to Ladakh, Spiti, and Zanskar, making it a crucial point for Himalayan explorers.

Keylong is deeply rooted in Buddhist culture, with centuries-old monasteries dotting the region. The Shashur Monastery, just 3 km from the town, is a spiritual haven known for its intricate wall paintings and the annual Cham Dance festival. The Ghepan Ghat, dedicated to the deity Ghepan, is another sacred site offering stunning views of the valley. Another major attraction is Tayul Monastery, home to a huge statue of Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). The locals, a mix of Tibetan and Lahauli cultures, continue to practice traditional rituals, agriculture, and weaving, keeping their heritage alive.

For adventure lovers, Keylong offers a variety of treks and scenic routes. The trek to Suraj Tal (Lake of the Sun God), located at 4,890 meters, is a thrilling journey through high-altitude terrains. The Bhaga River valley, with its apple orchards and cedar forests, is perfect for short hikes and nature walks. Keylong is also an ideal base for exploring Baralacha La (4,890 meters), a high mountain pass connecting Lahaul and Ladakh. With clear blue skies, breathtaking landscapes, and minimal pollution, Keylong is also a great destination for astrophotography and camping.
